Making Traditions Sweet

The Brasao brand is one of the oldest bean pastry brands.

In the late 19th century, an illustrious lady named D. Joaquina Rodrigues lived in the town of Torres Vedras. She had a recipe for some delicious pastries, made with great skill, which she shared with her family and friends.

D. Maria learned the lesson well and began making the little pastries to order, becoming the first person to sell them commercially.

However, the recipe was also passed on among D. Joaquina’s relatives, and so a relative named Maria Adelaide Rodrigues da Silva, known affectionately as Mazinha, also learned the art of making bean pastries.

The kind Mazinha, as everyone knew her, later married Mr. Alvaro de Fontes Simoes, nicknamed Pantaleao, who decided to commercially develop the sweets, which achieved resounding success that spread far beyond the Torres Vedras region.

Later on, local pastry shops began producing the famous pastries themselves, using their own recipes, but always based on almond and beans.

Shortly after, a stepdaughter of “Mazinha”, D. Vigilia, set up a new factory, which she named “Brasao”, her married surname.

By the middle of the century, the bean pastry had universally become known as the sweet of Torres Vedras.

Production ceased in 1960, and the brand was acquired in the 1990s by Marques & Lourenco – Docaria, Lda. under the “Brasao” label, and ever since, the delicious pastries have been made in Bonabal.

The Pastel de Feijao de Torres Vedras is currently in the process of certification.
